Aldea Maya draws largely from wells and the water comes out with high hardness and a naturally elevated pH, near 8. Many pools in the area run permanently above the correct range, and there chlorine loses effectiveness even though the test strip says there's plenty of it.
The most expensive mistake we see in Aldea Maya is adding chlorine without correcting pH first. At pH 8.2 chlorine works at less than half its capacity. The owner sees it isn't working, adds more, raises the pH further and enters a loop that only spends money. Here we always fix pH before touching chlorine.

Most likely your pH is high. It's the most common issue in Aldea Maya because of the well water. At pH 8.0 or above, the chlorine you add loses much of its disinfecting power. First bring pH down to the 7.2 to 7.6 range and the chlorine you already had starts working. Often you don't even need to add more.
Strips are fine day to day, but they degrade in Tulum's heat and humidity within a few months. To make decisions we measure with liquid reagent at every visit and leave you the reading in writing. If you want to test between visits, strips kept sealed somewhere cool are enough.
